Garage Organization Tips

Home organization and cleaning projects are common, but the garage really doesn’t seem to be a priority, or it tends to be forgotten most of the time. However, what many homeowners don’t realize is that cleaning up and organizing the garage can actually help improve and increase overall efficiency. It will be easier to find your tools and other equipment right when you need them. But how do you organize your garage? Below are some of the best garage organization tips you can try:

Categorize

To make it easier for you, you can try grouping the items in your garage according to category. For example, group items such as trays, rollers, paintbrushes and other painting materials or items together.

Install Wall Storage

You can also make use of wall storage as well when it comes to storing your items. To make your wall storage more versatile and utilize it better, you can add in or install a layer of plywood on the wall. This way, you can have a place where you can fasten almost anything. You will also be able to mount storage on the wall much easily. You can install a magnetic strip so you’ll have a place where you can install your tools in. You can just easily stick them on the strip and you won’t have to worry about rummaging through your drawers or toolbox looking for the tools that you often use. This will also make everything more organized as well. Aside from this, you can also install a coat rack in your garage so you’ll have a place where you can hang your umbrellas or coats in after a rainy day.

Add in Shelves or Bins

If you have a lot of stuff in your garage, then you can also add in shelves or storage bins. Plastic bins can be used, and these items work as great storage systems. You can separate your items and organize them according to season, or even according to your hobbies or sports. For example, you can use a bin for ski equipment, and a different one for surfing equipment. You can also put in labels to make it easier for you to locate items. Also, instead of stacking them together, you can also build storage towers to put your bins in, so that you won’t have to stack them together.

Use Baskets

For other items that cannot be organized, or items that are frequently used can also be stored in baskets. For example, if you live near the beach, then you can simple put in all your beach equipment into one basket so that you can easily grab them and go.

Safety is Important

Never skimp on safety. If you find old batteries while cleaning up, make sure that you put them in a safe place. You can group hazardous materials together so that you won’t forget about disposing them. Forgetting about these items can lead to other problems in the long run. Also, if you have a gas powered lawnmower or other flammable items in the garage, make sure that you have a fire extinguisher ready where you can easily access it. Take note of the expiry date as well.

Corner Shelving

Installing shelving in the garage is common, but have you ever thought about the corners? You can add in a corner shelf for extra storage. You can simply use plywood to make it. It will come in handy especially when you are storing small items like wax, glue and other items that may easily be lost on huge shelves or boxes.
