How to Tell if Your Gutters Are Clogged

Many homeowners may not pay much attention to their gutters, but they are actually a crucial part of your home that has an important role. Gutters direct the flow of water away from your home. This part of your home prevents various damages in foundation, along with dry rot as well.

Water damage that comes from clogged gutters is actually a common yet unexpected maintenance issue that many homeowners have to face. The sad thing is that problems with gutter aren’t really noticed until further damage has been done, or when it is already rainy season. Ideally, homeowners should have their gutters checked at least twice a year. Since not all homeowners are able to do this, it is important to be aware of the early signs of clogged gutters. Below are some signs that indicate clogged gutters:

1. Water Keeps Overflow

If you notice your roof overflowing, such as water spilling from the sides of your gutter or when your roof is beginning to look like a waterfall, then your gutters might be clogged. The clogged part of your gutters push water over the sides and edges of your home, and this can cause you great damages. This can potentially damage the external and internal structure of your home.

2. Water Inside Your Home

Another indication of potentially clogged gutters is when you notice water leaking
indoors. Your siding won’t be able to handle gushes or torrents of water that is running down, so the rainwater that is flowing from your clogged gutter will just end up leaking into your home, or indoor spaces.

3. Visible Mildew and Rust

Water causes various problems, and some of the most common ones are the presence of rust and mildew. If you see that there is already rust and mildew specifically along the side or top of your home, this indicates that there might be a possible water problem. This water problem is usually due to clogged gutters. Accumulated mildew and rust will also further damage your gutters as well.

4. Sagging Or Collapsing Gutter Sides

Clogged gutters will end up collecting water, and this will make your gutters heavier. When you have gutters that are clogged, water, debris, and dirt will make it heavy, causing it to be pushed down. When this happens, you may notice your gutters sagging, or collapsing. This is one of the most evident signs that your gutters are clogged, and you’re better off calling a professional at once.

5. You’ve Noticed Animals Near Your Roof

If you notice that there are already a lot of wild animals near your home such as birds or possums, then your might have clogged gutters, This is especially true if you notice them near your roof as well. This means that your gutters are in danger of becoming nests and potential homes for wild animals and critters. Other animals may also be mice, squirrels or even snakes. If you notice this happening to your home, especially near your gutters, then you might already have clogged ones that need to be checked by a professional.

6. Plants Are Growing
