As the spring season comes into full bloom each year, millions of people around the country await the season with excitement for all that this time of year normally holds.

However, this time of year also means there is a lot of work to be done for homeowners, especially where their lawn care is concerned. Spring is the best time of year to really begin preparing your lawn to fully bloom and be as beautiful as it possibly can be.  In order for that to happen though, a number of steps have to be taken, and in the proper order, to make your dreams of a having a luxurious lawn come true.

Before mid-April has arrived and the grass and flowers begin to start changing color and bloom again, it is time to start preparing your lawn once more. You should begin this process by removing all of the debris, including the leaves, from your front lawn with a sturdy, reliable rake.

Pay special attention to any areas of the lawn which may be matted, as there is a chance they may have snow mold on them. Raking the grass will allow it to receive more ventilation and help to prevent lawn disease and insect infestation from occurring.

After you have removed all of the debris from your lawn, the next step is to use a pre-emergent herbicide, preferably an organic one, to try and prevent crabgrass and weeds from growing on your lawn. This must also be done early on in the springtime, as the timing for this step is important.

The reason for this is that it must be done before the temperatures reach 55-60 degrees and the grass and flowers begin to grow again on their own. By that point, the weeds and other unwanted roots will already have had a chance to start growing, and you will have to spend much more time and energy trying to get rid of them.

After you have removed all of the debris and launched a preemptive strike against crabgrass and other types of unwanted weeds, you can actually start taking steps to help your new lawn grow. The first one will be to carefully apply some  fertilizer to your lawn.  This is an essential step for a couple of different reasons.

The first is that your lawn goes into a kind of hibernation during the winter months, which is why it stops growing during this time. By fertilizing the lawn, it essentially wakes it up out of its slumber and allows it to once again start its growth cycle.

 The other is that, as the summer months continue on, the heat continually beating down on your lawn will put it under stress. By giving the lawn the nutrients it needs to survive in the fertilizer, it will be better able to weather the more intense heat condition during the summer season.

In order to make sure water and air can reach the roots of your grass more quickly, it is a good idea to aerate your lawn after you have finished fertilizing it. This will help the lawn grow more lushly, but this is another item on the list that is time sensitive and should be done before mid-April.

 If the weather is warmer than sixty degrees and you attempt to aerate your lawn, it will actually do more harm than good. You will end up having made it easier for weeds and other types of aggressive plants to take hold in your lawn, so be sure to get this done well before the plants start to bloom again.

After all of that work has been done, you should survey your lawn and see if there is any areas of turf that were damaged during the winter season, as this is quite common. If this is the case, spring is the perfect time to start repairing these areas of damaged turf.

 However, if this is something you do not have a lot of experience with, you may want to call in the services of a professional to help you with this task. The reason for this is that it is very easy to make a mistake by using pre-emergent herbicide when you are not supposed to during a repair, which would prevent any type of seed from growing at all.
