What to Do if Woodpeckers Love Your House

Woodpeckers can be a problem especially if they are attracted to your house. Woodpeckers may simply be trying to claim their territory, or they may be looking for a mate. It may also be nesting season as well. With woodpeckers banging into your home and its siding, you may find yourself faced with holes on your house in no time. Having holes on your siding can lead to other problems. It can attract birds and other animals like squirrels, because the holes can be the best place for nesting. Having more animals in your home’s siding can only lead to more damage. The only way to prevent this from happening is by keeping the woodpeckers away. But how do you do this? Not every method can work, but try some of these things to figure out which ones work the best:

Cover The Holes And Repair Them

If your siding or house already has holes, other woodpeckers will become even more attracted to it. What you can do is to repair these holes in order to solve the problem. However, make sure you that you squeeze in some linseed oil in the opening before closing them off. Woodpeckers usually go for wasps or beetle larvae that can be in your siding. The oil will get rid of the insect that may be on your siding.

Put Up Bird Scare Balloons

Another method you can do is to put up a bird scare balloon near or in front of your house or the area that is affected. Leave it these for about a week, and check if it has scared off the woodpeckers. Sometimes, putting up these balloons can be enough to keep the woodpeckers away.

Scare Them Away

As much as how woodpeckers can be noisy, they aren’t a fan of loud sounds. While you can’t always wait for woodpeckers to come to your home and scare them off yourself, you can add in motion sensors that will make noise once they sense that there are birds nearby. These sensors prove to be very effective because the woodpeckers won’t be comfortable in your home, and will only lead to these birds finding another place instead.

Another thing to try is to use molds or dummies of other birds that woodpeckers are afraid of. These birds may be hawks or owls. If you decide on using bird molds or dummies, make sure you change their locations from time to time in order to make sure that the woodpeckers don’t suspect that they are not real. You may also want to consider adding in natural predators such as plastic snakes.

Woodpecker Repellants

You can also make use of woodpecker repellants to address the problem. There are bird repellant tapes available in home depots or stores that work effectively. You can also install in something that will reflect sunlight, such as aluminum foil. What you can do is to add in the strips of aluminum foil near where the woodpeckers usually stay in.
